Leaving: October 2015

Once you look past the Great Epix massacre of 2015, it's not that bad a month so far.  Of course, I'm referring to Netflix's decision to not renew with Epix due to its lack of exclusitivity and all of its movies leaving that service.  If you miss Epix, perhaps you can check out Prime or Hulu?

It's a bit early, but I am noticing a lack of huge films leaving so far in October.  Notably, there's Crank (October 9) which is a film that's not for all tastes, but it at least deserves credit for being true to itself.  Also leaving that same day is Insidious Chapter 2, which is the sequel to the paranormal hit with Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne.

On October 15, the Oscar nominated documentary Dirty Wars which focuses on America mitigating terror threats around the world bids us adieu.  Also leaving on the same date is the underrated horror The House of the Devil which features an young woman taking a babysitter job which proves to be increasingly strange.  One thing leads to another, even though I can't believe Netflix didn't put a greater emphasis on horror this month.  For those craving comedians earlier in their careers, Live on the Sunset Strip expires on the 15th as well.  That title features Kevin Hart and Katt Williams.  Finally, that same day Sesame Street bids us goodbye as well as it heads over to its new home on HBO Go.

Bruno (October 16) leaves Netflix the next day.  Although I thought it was weaker than Borat, I know some fans of Sacha Baron Cohen's take on the gay reporter.  I'll admit that watching celebs like Harrison Ford and Paula Abdul squirm was amusing.  Also going that day is the Robert De Niro/Michelle Pfeiffer comedy The Family about a mob family's struggles with witness protection and their new home of Normandy, France.  But let's not forget Chico and Rita (October 16), an animated love story that also focuses on Cuba and jazz music of the 1940s.

Gerard Butler attempts to change his image in the drama Machine Gun Preacher (October 22) about a drug dealer who turns into a spiritual warrior and rescuer of child soldiers in the Sudan.  Based on the scores in RT and Metacritic, not really sure how effective he was at doing that.  Interestingly, I may have been the first to catch that Don Jon (October 23) was leaving.  It's a tale of a lothario who learns life lessons from two women he dates.  Based on the critical response, that might be worth catching.  And finally, America's Sweethearts (October 29), a comic tale of a Hollywood couple that goes bust and a sister who pines for her sister's estranged husband.  Sounds a bit uneven, but you got Julia Roberts in it as the pining sister and the couple is played by Catherine Zeta-Jones and John Cusack so the star power might be nice.

A note:  The dates listed are the date a film leaves Netflix.  If you want to be sure to catch it, be sure to finish your viewing by the night before.

Second note:  Although I do my best, I'll probably not get to all titles that are leaving.  For a better grasp of what's leaving, be sure to check out the blog What's Expiring on Netflix Soon?  Their list is fuller and more up to date than mine.
