Coming to Netflix Streaming May 2017

This is a tentative list of titles that will be streaming on Netflix Instant Streaming throughout the month of May.

Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution (2015):  Documentary examines the history of the Black Panther Party as well as its legacy.

Blood on the Mountain (2016):  This provocative documentary explores the coal mining traditions of West Virginia and the corporate interests that can affect lives.

Bombay Talkies (2013):  Four top Indian filmmakers direct four tales that highlight the range of human emotions in this portmanteau; with Rani Mukerji.

Boss (2013):  A boy that was disowned by his father is taken in by a crime boss.  Decades later, the father comes back to ask the man's help with his imprisoned brother; with Akshay Kumar.

Budhia Singh: Born to Run (2016):  Five year old Indian boy overcomes a tumultous childhood to become a marathon running champion; with Manoj Bajpayee.

Chaahat (1996):  A streetwise singer takes his sick father to Mumbai where he gets involved in a dangerous love triangle; with Shah Rukh Khan.

Chashme Buddoor (2013):  When a pretty new neighbor falls for their shy roommate, two jealous womanizers scheme to break up the happy couple; with Ali Zafar.

Chocolat (2000):  A young mother makes waves in a peaceful French town by opening a chocolate shop during Lent; with Juliette Binoche and Judi Dench.

Decanted (2016):  This documentary explores the Napa Valley in California, home to many vineyards and winemakers.

Dharam Sankat Mein (2015):  After a Hindu man learns he was adopted from a Muslim couple, he seeks out his father but must overcome his prejudices along the way; with Paresh Rawal.

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2007):  Author and magazine editor suffers a stroke that leaves him paralyzed and mute, but he refuses to surrender; with Mathieu Amalric.

Diving Into the Unknown (2016):  An expedition of cave diving turns tragic and four survivors defy authorities to retrieve those who died in this documentary.

Don't Think Twice (2016):  Six talented, struggling improv comics find their attitudes changing when one of them finds success on television; with Mike Birbiglia and Keegan-Michael Key.

Drifter (2016):  Outlaw brothers on mission to avenge their father's death end up victims of a carjacking and find themselves stranded in a desolated town; with Aria Emory.

Drishyam (2015):  A humble businessman becomes a murder suspect when an inspector general's son vanishes after targeting the businessman's daughter for sexual blackmail; with Ajay Devgn.

Ella Brennan: Commanding the Table (2016):  Chefs, food critics, and historians reflect on the life of Ella Brennan, a female restaurateur who put New Orleans food on the map.

Embrace (2016):  Taryn Brumfitt, activist/media sensation, takes on the challenge of stopping body shaming and eliminating negative body images to create a new way to perceive bodies in this documentary.

English Babu Desi Mem (1996):  Wealthy expat returns to India after learning his twin brother is presumed dead and finds himself having feelings for his brother's widow and son; with Shah Rukh Khan.

Esteros (2016):  Two childhood friends reunite a decade after being separated only to learn that their mutual attraction hasn't faded with time; with Ignacio Rogers.

Fire in the Blood (2012):  A filmmaker dives into Africa's AIDS crisis to put a human face on those caught in the battle over generic, inexpensive HIV drugs in this documentary.

Forrest Gump (1994):  A friendly, simpleminded man finds himself connected to major events in the 1960s and 1970s, but he just wants to reunite with his beloved Jenny; with Tom Hanks.

Gollu Aur Pappu (2014):  Two hapless brothers stumble into a terrorist plot and end up being ordered to detonate a bomb, a plan which seems destined for failure; with Vir Das.

HALO Legends (2009):  Anthology movie features seven independent anime shorts delving into the futuristic universe of the video game world of HALO.

Happy Feet (2006):  A young penguin is unable to sing like his peers and is ostracized, but it turns out he can tap dance; with voices of Elijah Wood and Robin Williams.

Harry Benson: Shoot First (2016):  Documentary explores the career of photographer Benson, best known for his candid shots of numerous celebrities including the Beatles.

He Even Has Your Eyes (2016):  French African couple finally gets their long sought after adoptive baby, but things hit the ceiling when it turns out the baby is white; with Lucien Jean-Baptiste.

Heritage Falls (2016):  A retired high school coach, his bookish son and a free-spirited grandson face their differences during a weekend at a rugged mountain cabin; with David Keith.

Humpback Whales (2015):  Documentary examines the re-emergence of humpback whales from a state of near extinction over a period of fifty years; with Ewan McGregor.

In Defense of Food (2015):  PBS documentary explores how the Western diet has ruined the health of people and offers solutions for the future; with Michael Pollan.

In the Shadow of Iris (2016):  The sudden disappearance of the wife of a wealthy banker leads to a web of secrets, lies and desperate acts; with Romain Duris.

Inkaar (2013):  Ad agency CEO is placed under investigation when his ambitious protege and lover accuses him of sexual harrassment.  So India's answer to Disclosure; with Arjun Rampal.

Jailbait (2014):  Back!  Anna is driven to kill her relentlessly abusive stepfather and ends up in a dangerously sadistic juvenile detention center; with Sara Malakul Lane.

Kahaani (2012):  A pregnant, lonely woman searches for her missing husband in the city of Kolkata only to learn that nothing is what it seems; with Vidya Balan.

A Kind of Murder (2016):  Crime novelist becomes obsessed with unsolved murder case, fantasizes about killing wife, becomes prime suspect when she turns up dead; with Patrick Wilson.

Kiss and Cry (2017);  Figure skater won't let a diagnosis for throat cancer dissuade her from singing for an online audience in this biopic; with Sarah Fisher and Luke Bilyk.

Liberating a Continent: John Paul 2 and the Fall of Communism (2016):  Documentary examines the role that Pope John Paul 2 played in bringing down Europe's Eastern Bloc.

Loev (2015):  A hiking trip causes a Wall Street hotshot to explore his true feelings for a friend who's disenchanted with his boyfriend; with Shiv Pandit.

Losing Sight of Shore (2017):  Documentary focuses on the feats of the Coxless Crew, a team of four women rowers who traveled from San Francisco to Australia in support of two charities.

Loving Ibiza (2013):  On the island of Ibiza, a group of people fall in love with each other and the island. Basis for series; with Simone Kleinsma.

Malibu's Most Wanted (2003):  A gubernatorial candidate hires two streetwise people to scare his embarrassing son straight, but problem is they have no clue how to do it; with Jamie Kennedy and Taye Diggs.

Mary Kom (2014):  Biopic of the Indian boxer who overcame a disapproving father and other obstacles to become a world champion; with Priyanka Chopra (Quantico).

Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise (2016):  Poet and civil rights activist gets a documentary take that focuses on her words, videos, and rare photos covering her life; with Angelou and Common.

Moh Maya Money (2016):  Morally flexible real estate agent involves his wife in dangerous plan to recover money lost in a shady investment gone wrong; with Ranvir Shorey.

Mostly Sunny (2016):  Documentary focuses on the unusual transition of Sunny Leone from adult films to Bollywood movies and reality TV.

Mumbai Delhi Mumbai (2014):  A Mumbai girl in Delhi for the first time loses her phone but may find love with the boy who agrees to help her; with Shiv Pandit.

The Music Never Stopped (2011):  The estranged parents of a son who ran away from home 20 years before learn that he has a brain tumor that stops him from having new memories; with JK Simmons.

Nerdland (2016):  Two friends find their pact to become famous in 24 hours leads them down a path of crime, chloroform, and witness protection; with voices of Paul Rudd and Patton Oswalt.

The Next Skin (2016):  A withdrawn long-missing teen reappears in a chilly alpine town and his family will have to determine whether he is who he says he is; with Alex Monner.

The Night of the Wild Boar (2016):  Romance writer looks for answers on her boyfriend's death in South America, gets tangled up in dark, deadly historical mystery; with Catalina Zahri.

Oh My God (2012):  Mumbai shopkeeper decides to sue God when an earthquake destroys his store and insurance won't cover the bill; with Akshay Kumar.

One by Two (2014):  Lives of a Mumbai man and woman with issues intersect through a TV dance show she wants to win and he wants to destroy; with Abhay Deol.

Pyaar Ka Punchnama (2011):  Three bachelor roomies find their worlds changing when each of them falls in love with someone; with Kartik Aaryan.

Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2 (2015):  Three bachelor buddies are looking for true love, but are unprepared for the complexities of romantic relationships; with Kartik Aaryan.

Queen (2014):  A young woman goes on a honeymoon vacation days after being jilted prior to her wedding and finds a new zest for life; with Kangana Ranaut.

Raja Hindustani (1996):  When poor cab driver falls in love with wealthy young woman, he must stand up to her family and face his own insecurities before true love can happen; with Aamir Khan.

Saeed Mirza: The Leftist Sufi (2016):  Documentary explores the Hindi film director known as much for his politics as his cinema.

Scream (1996):  A year following her mother's death, a teenager and her friends have to deal with a masked serial killer who is obsessed with horror films; with Neve Campbell and Courtney Cox.

Shaitan (2011):  A troubled rich girl and her wild friends stage a fake kidnapping with a plan to collect the ransom needed to pay off a blackmailer; with Rajkummar Rao.

Silver Skies (2016):  A group of colorful, vivaceous retirees attempt to fight for their apartments when they learn that they are being sold; with George Hamilton.

Sophie and the Rising Sun (2016):  During the fall of 1941, the arrival of a mysterious stranger in a small South Carolina town leads to a forbidden romance; with Julianne Nicholson.

Special 26 (2013):  Crime drama focuses on Indian con artists who pose as government officials so they could pull a daytime raid on a prominent jeweler; with Akshay Kumar.

Tanu Weds Manu (2011):  When London based doctor Manu returns home to India in search of a bride, he finds the girl of his dreams...who is in love with someone else; with Madhavan.

Things to Come (2016):  A comfortable existence falters for a middle-aged philosophy teacher when she loses her mother and her husband in quick succession; with Isabelle Huppert.

Travis: A Soldier's Story (2013):  Documentary focuses on Army Staff Sergeant Travis Mills's efforts to rebuild his life after losing limbs while serving in Afghanistan.

Tuscan Wedding (2014):  The owners of a luxurious Tuscan villa welcomes crowds of betrothed couples and their sometimes quirky guests attending weddings; with Sophie van Oers.

What the Fish (2013):  A crabby woman entrusts the care of her fish to her neice's fiance while she is on vacation, but when she's gone, the rules go out the window; with Dimple Kapadia.

Will to Love (2015):  A carefree bachelor's life comes to a halt when he learns he must marry before his grandfather dies to inherit the family fortune; with Marques Houston and Keisha Knight Pulliam.

Yamla Pagla Deewana 2 (2013):  A fake guru and his son continue the con games in this sequel as they attempt to grift in Canada, Banaras, and the UK; with Dharmendra.

A Yellow Bird (2016):  Homeless ex-con in Singapore hoping to reunite with his family forms a bond with a Chinese sex worker while serving as her bodyguard; with Sivakumar Palakrishnan.

May 2:

Bodyguards: Secret Life from the Watchtower (2016):  The world of bodyguards who protect celebrities and politicians from harm is the focus of this documentary; narrated by Kim Coates.

Daughter of the Lake (2015):  An Andean woman fights a Peruvian mining firm planning to evict her from her land in order to acquire the gold in the lake in this documentary.

Maria Bamford: Old Baby (2017):  The star of Lady Dynamite does a comic routine that ends up being performed in park benches, bowling alleys, and LA theaters in this special.

Two Lovers and a Bear (2016):  Troubled couple living near the North Pole begins an arduous journey south to find peace and vanquish past ghosts; with Dane DeHaan and Tatiana Maslany.

May 5:

Anti-Social (2015):  Anarchic street artist gets close to mainstream success even as his con artist brother makes a living and reputation for robbing jewelry counters; with Gregg Sulkin.

Handsome: A Netflix Mystery Movie (2017):  Homicide detective Gene Handsome sets out to solve a woman's murder while searching for what's wrong in his own life; with Jeff Garlin.

The Mars Generation (2017):  Self-professed teenage nerds at Space Camp dream of traveling to Mars while various experts discuss NASA's history and future; with Neil deGrasse Tyson.

Simplemente Manu NNA (2017):  Eclectic Mexican stand up comic Manu NNA does a special on being gay in Mexico, telenovelas, and mezcal.

May 6:

Cold War 2 (2016):  Police commissioner is stuck in a dilemma when forced to choose between releasing the jailed son of a former rival or never seeing his kidnapped wife and daughter again; with Aaron Kwok

When the Bough Breaks (2017):   Documentary focuses on postpartum depression and psychosis, in particular the causes of the illness as well as treatments for it; with Brooke Shields.

May 7:

The Host (2013):  A reluctant alliance is struck between a parasite soul and a human girl searching for her family, much to the chagrin of the Seeker.  Can't stand the violence against the lead girl; with Saoirse Ronan and Max Irons.

LoveTrue (2016):  This film blurs the lines between documentary and dramatization as three separate tales test the notions of love in a stripper, surfer, and musician; with Abraham Boyd.

Stake Land 2: The Stakelander (2016):  A tragedy causes Martin to seek his mentor in a post-apocalyptic future to get revenge against the new leader of a vampire army; with Conner Paolo.

May 8:

Beyond the Gates (2016):  Two brothers closing a video store belonging to their missing father finds a videotape game.  But when they decide to play, danger follows; with Graham Skipper.

Hunter Gatherer (2016):  A middle aged man returns from prison hoping to win back his true love and enlists a slow witted new friend on a harebrained business idea; with Andre Royo.

National Bird (2016):  Three former military operatives offer disturbing firsthand accounts of the deadly impact that US drone warfare has had on civilians overseas in this documentary.

Oceans Rising (2017):  A late evacuation order for a deadly hurricane costs lives in Tampa and leaves survivors to battle rising waters with limited resources; with Jason Tobias.

May 9:

All We Had (2016):  An aimless woman and her teen daughter decide to make a go of it when they become stranded in a small town on the way to Boston; with Katie Holmes (who also directed).

Norm McDonald: Hitler's Dog, Gossip & Trickery (2017):  The former Weekend Update anchor offers sly, deadpan observations from an older and perhaps wiser point of view.

May 10:

The Adventure Club (2016):  Three smart, adventurous kids find a key and launch a quest towards finding a coveted archaeological treasure; with Sam Ashe Arnold.

Aiyyaa (2012):  A young girl lives with her eccentric family next to a smelly rubbish dump while diving into a fantasy Bollywood world; with Prithviraj Sukumaran.

El Apostata (2015):  Young man determined to renounce Catholicism by excising his baptism records faces church bureaucracy and inner conflicts; with Alvaro Ogalla.

Bald Mountain (2013):  Back!  Two best friends head for Serra Pelada dreaming of wealth during the 1980 Brazilian Gold Rush, but greed threatens everything; with Juliano Cazarre.

Bbuddah Hoga Terra Baap (2011):  A hit man in exile at Paris becomes angry at a series of crimes and returns to India to seek justice; with Amitabh Bachchan.

The Suspect (2013):  Back!  Two African American academics go to a small Southern town and impersonate bank robbers to see how the role of race is used in law enforcement; with Taye Diggs.

Get Me Roger Stone (2017):  The rise, fall, and rebirth of political operative Stone, most recently famous for being campaign manager to Donald Trump in 2016, is explored in this documentary.

A Hundred Streets (2017):  In a London neighborhood, the lives of a troubled ex-rugby star, his estranged wife, a gentle cabbie, and a soulful drug dealer dovetail; with Idris Elba and Gemma Arterton.

Mindhorn (2017):  The washed up actor of a 1980s TV detective finds himself on the spot when a serial killer insists that only the character alone can talk to him; with Julian Barratt and Essie Davis.

Sahara (2017):  A young cobra and his scorpion best friend go across the desert to rescue the snake's lover who had been captured by an evil snake charmer; with voices of Omar Sy and Jean Dujardin.

School for Scoundrels (2006):  Roger joins a confidence building course to win over his dream girl, but finds new competition in the form of his instructor; with Jon Heder and Billy Bob Thornton.

Yelling to the Sky (2011):  Teen tries to reconcile her dreams with the realities of her violent surroundings; with Zoe Kravitz and Tim Blake Nelson.

30 Days in September (2017):  For a woman dealing with childhood sexual trauma, she is unable to sustain a romantic relationship for more than 30 days; with Ira Dubey.

Ant Story (2013):  Scheming daydreamer realizes that his stolen phone belongs to a famous actress and decides to blackmail her into posing as his fiancee; with Noor Imran Mithu.

Bowie: The Man Who Changed the World (2016):  Documentary explores the impact David Bowie had on music, art, and culture through interviews with those who knew him best; with Bowie.

Chamatkar (1992):  A young teacher after being swindled out of his money agrees to help out a ghost with redemption in exchange for help in landing his own dreams; with Shah Rukh Khan.

City of Trees (2015):  This documentary focuses on the struggles of a non-profit to survive as it tries to create jobs and improve Washington DC through a program of planting trees.

Command and Control (2017):  Sobering documentary explores the careful balance between power and safety of weapons of mass destruction through a 1980 missile accident in Arkansas.

The Devil's Mistress (2016):  An ambitious actress pursues her dreams of stardom in Berlin prior to World War 2, but prospects dry up when she becomes Goebbel's mistress; with Tatiana Pauhofova.

Enemy of the State (1998):  A hotshot lawyer finds himself on the run and reluctantly teaming up with a conspiracy theorist when an incriminating video ends up in his pocket; with Will Smith and Gene Hackman.

The Intent (2016):  After a burgeoning criminal joins an increasingly violent crew, the gang feels threats coming from all sides; with Dylan Duffus.

Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa (1994):  Complex love triangle results when a happy go lucky band member falls for Anna, but she only has eyes for a rich man; with Shah Rukh Khan.

Lovesong (2016):  Best friends share an unexpected moment on a road trip, and years later struggle to reconnect before a wedding; with Jena Malone and Riley Keough.

Packed in a Trunk: The Lost Art of Edith Lake Wilkinson (2015):  A great niece of the famed artist sets out to find out why she was institutionalized and never heard from again decades before.

Ram Jaane (1995):  Two boyhood friends take very different paths to boyhood, but both fall for the same woman; with Shah Rukh Khan.

Sinatra: To Be Frank (2015):  Documentary examines how a "regular guy" named Frank Sinatra would become one of the biggest stars of the 20th century through music and film.

Smash: Motorized Mayhem (2015):  Documentary explores a twice a year school bus race in Florida with hairpin turns and wrecks are part of the deal.

Somewhere in the Middle (2015):  Relationships and infatuations falter and rise as the lives of four lovers intersect in various stories told from differing perspectives; with Cassandra Freeman.

Tag (2015):  The sole survivor of a freakish bus accident finds herself in a surreal and violent alternative universe; with Reina Triendl.

Television (2012):  The local residents of a rural Indian village rise up against their leader when they consider his ban of modern devices have gone too far; with Shahir Kazi Huda.

May 16:

Between Us (2016):  A woman and her bohemian boyfriend who are pressured to marry head out for an unforgettable night in LA: with Olivia Thirlby and Ben Feldman.

Big Fat City (2016):  Mumbai couple in dire financial straits hosts a dinner party for friends that leads to murder; with Shilpa Shukla.

The Break-Up (2006):  A cohabiting couple finds their frequent spats turning into an all-out battle for their condo.  Nobody's seen War of the Roses?; with Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn.

Christine (2016):  In this film based on true events, an awkward but ambitious TV reporter struggles to adapt when she's told to focus on violent, salacious stories; with Rebecca Hall and Michael C. Hall.

Clown (2014):  A real estate agent decides to don a clown costume for his child's birthday party only to learn that he can't take it off afterwards.  Weird, but bad; with Andy Powers.

The Place Beyond the Pines (2013):  Violent confrontation between a motorcycle riding bank robber and a rookie cop reaches a second generation.  This was good, I thought; with Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper.

Tracy Morgan: Staying Alive (2017):  In his first stand up special since his car accident, Morgan jokes about life in a coma, his second marriage, and the dark side of his family.

Viral (2016):  Two quick-witted teen sisters find themselves trapped at home as parasitic worms which has invaded their town threaten to take over their bodies; with Sofia Black D'Elia and Analeigh Tipton.

Wild Oats (2016):  When a insurance mistake pays her millions of dollars, a retired teacher and her best friend go to the Canary Islands in search of the adventure of their lives; with Shirley MacLaine.

May 18:

Emmanuel Macron: Behind the Rise (2017):  This documentary examines the bruising political campaign of Macron who suddenly rose to become the youngest president in French history.

May 19:

Blame! (2017):  A mysterious loner emerges to get a remnant of humanity to survive a replicating city bent on eliminating all life; with voice of Takahiro Sakurai.

Laerte-se (2017):  This documentary explores the fall out of one of Brazil's most talented cartoonists when she introduces herself as a woman after 6 decades of living as a man.

May 21:

Beauty and the Beast (2014):  The live action film based on the fairy tale as a merchant's brave and beautiful daughter agrees to trade places with her father, a prisoner of a fearsome beast; with Lea Seydoux and Vincent Cassel.

What's with Wheat? (2016):  Farmers, scientists, and nutritionists weigh in on how gluten intolerance came about and how modern production might be to blame for it; with Justin Brown.

May 22:

Colombia: Wild Magic (2015):  Nature documentary that reveals the stunning vistas and native wildlife of the fragile ecosystem of the South American country.

Elizabeth at 90: A Family Tribute (2016):  Intimate recollections from the royal family and rarely seen home movies pay tribute to the British monarch on the eve of her 90th birthday in this documentary.

Inglorious Basterds (2009):  During a World War 2 film premiere in Paris, a group of American soldiers plan an attack on the Nazis.  But the cinema owner has her own plan; with Brad Pitt and Christoph Waltz.

May 23:

Ares (2016):  In the future, France tries to distract from crippling poverty and prevent despair and rebellion by airing a violent TV show.  Didn't they learn anything from The Running Man; with Ola Rapace.

Dig Two Graves (2014):  Girl's grief over her brother's tragic death leads her to ally with moonshiners who promise to bring him back to life for a steep price; with Samantha Isler and Ted Levine.

Hasan Minhaj: Homecoming King (2017):  This stand up special from the Daily Show correspondent deals with his personal takes on racism, immigrant parents, and prom night horrors.

May 24:

Southpaw (2015):  Former boxing star Billy Hope must restart his life after a tragedy, but can he still turn himself into a champion; with Jake Gyllenhaal and Rachel McAdams.

May 25:

Detour (2016):  A law student drunkenly agrees to the murder of his stepfather who he blames for causing the car crash that left his mother in a coma; with Tye Sheridan and Emory Cohen.

May 26:

Believe (2016):  After his family run factory falters and the town's holiday pagaent runs into jeopardy, Matthew faces issues of character and faith; with Ryan O'Quinn and Shawnee Smith.

I Am Jane Doe (2017):  Intense documentary focuses on American girls drawn into the child sex trade industry through online newspaper ads; with Jessica Chastain.

Joshua: Teenager vs. Superpower (2017):  Teenager Joshua Wong mobilizes young citizens to protest Hong Kong's merger with China as shown in this documentary.

Raees (2017):  A street smart kid rises to become a bootlegging king in 1980s India and attempts to balance his life of crime with helping his people; with Shah Rukh Khan.

War Machine (2017):  Proud general agrees to take on and win an unpopular war head-on, unaware that his own hubris might undo him.  Reviews aren't so hot for this; with Brad Pitt and Topher Grace.

American Experience: Ruby Ridge (2017):  A failed attempt to arrest an Idaho white supremacist leads to a gun battle, a standoff, and three deaths that galvanize 1992 public opinion in this documentary.

The Disappointments Room (2016):  Troubled architect moves her family to a spacious fixer upper where she discovers a locked room filled with ghosts; with Kate Beckinsale and Lucas Till.

Oklahoma City (2017):  The shocking attack on an Oklahoma City federal building in 1995 by Timothy McVeigh is explored in depth during this documentary; pretty good, but maybe could have focused on stories of survival and courage more.

A Plastic Ocean (2016):  Documentary filmmaker is moved after spotting plastic waste all over the world's oceans and decides to focus on the environmental damage occurring; sounds great for Earth Day.

Tramps (2017):  Two young strangers drawn into a briefcase swap deal spend an eventful night together when things go wrong (and they inevitably do); with Callum Turner and Mike Birbiglia.
