  3. Your description for Queen of the South (May 9) is for the original Mexican series; the American reboot takes place in Mexico and Texas.

Good job on the rest of the descriptions, particularly the foreign content.

  5. What's the deal here? I count at least 24 Indian movies, followed by a lot of PBS American Experience documentaries, in what is definitely the worst first day of the month Netflix "dump" in a long time.

    1. Well, you would think that Netflix would try more considering how close to 100 million subscribers worldwide. Not so much. Blame it on the growing costs of originals.

For me, highlights are The Black Panthers (I had given up on that film ever showing up), Don't Think Twice, and the return of Mary Kom (I know, but it sounded interesting).

Will agree that it's a weak start. Hopefully the month brings forth more surprises like Bridget Jones's Baby (maybe not that good, but hey, nobody saw it coming!)

    2. Agreed, Black Panthers and Defying the Nazis are good additions not available elsewhere. However, numerous American Experience documentaries are available on pbs.org, particularly if you make a $120 tax-deductible contribution to your local public television station, a small price to pay for keeping public television.

Both Amazon and Hulu have the luxury of going into the Epix catalogue. Amazon can also draw from its deals with Bleeker Street, Broadgreen Pictures and A24, as well as its own originals (like Manchester by the Sea) to supplement its movie selections. (Moonlight, from A24, will be streaming on Amazon this month, together with Manchester by the Sea.). In contrast, Netflix keeps bringing on a series of relatively small budget indies, with very little promotion. I suspect the number of Netflix original movies numbers three times the number of Amazon originals, but they lack the kind of promotion that Amazon is giving to its releases (including theatrical releases.). Without significant promotion, even the big-budget movies like War Machine, Okya and Bright are going to be overlooked by a large number of Netflix viewers. (Apparently, the only bright spot is Adam Sandler who seems to be popular somewhere (not in my neighborhood).

However, if Netflix wants to maintain its preeminence in the streaming ecosystem, it is going to have to do better than provide American moviegoers with a surfeit of Indian movies and K-Pop TV shows, most of which are not even seen on Netflix in their own markets. This content just looks like "filler" between Netflix originals and the occasional Disney or Weinstein Company offering and is demeaning to Netflix US viewers.

  6. I am not sure why The Originals, Season 4 was listed as streaming on May 4. The last episode airs on June 23, which should translate into a June 30 release on Netflix.

  7. Despite what it said on the Netflix press release, I think that Love turned out to be Loev. At least we got Jailbait back...

    1. Cold War 2 eventually came around on MaFt's blog a few days later. Still no sign of The Fosters yet (will wait for some confirmation before including it).

  10. And the latest update...it appears that it showed up when it was supposed to by InstantWatcher. Although no signs of it appear on MaFt's site, it's a matter of time. I blame the split seasons for the confusion.

  11. So we get CW series seven days after the end of the season...except when we don't? Where is Riverdale? (My guess is tomorrow.)

    1. Good guess. It has indeed shown up today. They're treating it as consistently as the Disney films (BFG is understandable, but am I the only one thinking The Light Between Oceans should be here by now?)
