Leaving Netflix Streaming September 2016

Five Takeaways for September:

5.  Based on the press release, Everybody Loves Raymond is leaving on September 1.  There's a couple of problems with this premise, starting with the amount of notice received.  Normally a TV series gets 30 days before it expires on the site.  If you have been watching this site on a regular basis, then you know we got about 30 days warning on Fringe which is leaving September 11.  The press release gave us about a month's notice on Alias which I can confirm seeing on uNoGS as of today.  The week notice on Raymond just doesn't make sense.  The second problem is that I can't find any confirmation on it expiring right now.  It's not on uNoGS, not on Netflix's site, and not on my secondary source IWB either.  Thus, for now, I'm leaving Everybody Loves Raymond off of my list.  Perhaps this is the first warning for the series leaving for real, but I think you can safely stream Raymond and his loving wife and crazy family on September 1. (Note:  Unfortunately, I got burned on this.  But the fact remains that Netflix should have let us know on August 1 that Raymond was leaving, not August 26---the date of the PR announcement.  They owe us, their subscribers an apology on that one.)

4.  On the list, there are several series that are leaving this coming month.  Most notably, Fringe which is also leaving Amazon Prime about the same time.  Is it Hulu bound?  If so, then we're looking at a delay of no Fringe anywhere right now since it didn't appear on Hulu's list.  Are we looking at the next Dr. Who where a bidding war ensues for the (exclusive) rights to the series?  That I could see happening.  Stay tuned.

Other series leaving vary in value.  Melissa and Joey sounds like a remake of Who's the Boss that came from ABC Family.  The two leads are alright and the premise might be OK, but I don't think that I can get all that enthusiastic.  Alias had a couple of good seasons out of its premise but it drowned in Rembaldi this and Rembaldi that after a while.  Still, it was nice to see Jennifer Garner kicking butt and get an early glimpse of Bradley Cooper.  Might have to check out an episode or two for old times sake, although it may still be showing on Hulu after it expires here.  How to Be a Gentleman looks dreadful, like a very poor man's version of Odd Couple.  Based on the premise (how can someone be charmingly vulgar) and thumbnail, there is zero chance I'll be giving this a shot.  666 Park Avenue might be worth a shot depending on how much you love evil Terry O'Quinn or its premise of a plot in prime Manhattan being worth the price of losing one's soul.  I could see myself checking out the pilot at least.

3.  For those who grew up in the 1990s, the film selection will be dwindling on September 1.  We say au revoir to Anastasis, Anywhere But Here, Days of Thunder, Double Jeopardy, Eraser, The Haunting, the Jurassic Parks and The Wood on that date.  And count The English Patient which leaves on September 2.

Fortunately, if you look at the selection of films coming this month, there's some quality replacements.  And I'm not talking about Jaws: The Revenge (although yes, that's on there as well).

2.  Fans of newer films will be losing some gems this month as well.  Documentaries leaving on the first include Exporting Raymond (which indeed is expiring) that gets into how a family sitcom can translate into Russia, Girl Rising which gets into how girls around the world are doing things to lessen the gender gap, Our Man in Tehran which explores the true events that led into Argo from a Canadian point of view, and The Unbelievers which examines the quest of several atheists to use science and reason to cause those following religion to think more about things.  Throw in Levitated Mass, A Year in Burgundy, I Know That Voice, and We Always Lie to Strangers and we're looking at a bad month for recent documentaries.

In fictional films, Childless and Machine has received some critical raves while Humshakals and War of the Worlds: Goliath has drawn brickbats.  All three leave on the first.  After that date, films of varying quality like Out in the Lineup, How to Train Your Dragon 2, and Jobs depart from streaming in September.  They will be missed.

1.  Classic film fans will probably not look forward to this month either.  You may hear a familiar whistle.

Oscar winners/nominees leaving on the first include The Bridge on the River Kwai, The Color Purple, The Crucible, Full Metal Jacket, Jurassic Park, The Robe, Roman Holiday, and Traffic.  Throw in The English Patient on the 2nd and we're definitely feeling the loss here.  Later on, both Lilo and Stitch and How to Train Your Dragon 2 which were nominees for best animated film.  Later on in the month, we're also losing The Kids are Alright.  Netflix might be alright in the end, but not so sure about its subscribers.
