Leaving Netflix Streaming September 2016

Five Takeaways for September:

5.  Based on the press release, Everybody Loves Raymond is leaving on September 1.  There's a couple of problems with this premise, starting with the amount of notice received.  Normally a TV series gets 30 days before it expires on the site.  If you have been watching this site on a regular basis, then you know we got about 30 days warning on Fringe which is leaving September 11.  The press release gave us about a month's notice on Alias which I can confirm seeing on uNoGS as of today.  The week notice on Raymond just doesn't make sense.  The second problem is that I can't find any confirmation on it expiring right now.  It's not on uNoGS, not on Netflix's site, and not on my secondary source IWB either.  Thus, for now, I'm leaving Everybody Loves Raymond off of my list.  Perhaps this is the first warning for the series leaving for real, but I think you can safely stream Raymond and his loving wife and crazy family on September 1. (Note:  Unfortunately, I got burned on this.  But the fact remains that Netflix should have let us know on August 1 that Raymond was leaving, not August 26---the date of the PR announcement.  They owe us, their subscribers an apology on that one.)

4.  On the list, there are several series that are leaving this coming month.  Most notably, Fringe which is also leaving Amazon Prime about the same time.  Is it Hulu bound?  If so, then we're looking at a delay of no Fringe anywhere right now since it didn't appear on Hulu's list.  Are we looking at the next Dr. Who where a bidding war ensues for the (exclusive) rights to the series?  That I could see happening.  Stay tuned.

Other series leaving vary in value.  Melissa and Joey sounds like a remake of Who's the Boss that came from ABC Family.  The two leads are alright and the premise might be OK, but I don't think that I can get all that enthusiastic.  Alias had a couple of good seasons out of its premise but it drowned in Rembaldi this and Rembaldi that after a while.  Still, it was nice to see Jennifer Garner kicking butt and get an early glimpse of Bradley Cooper.  Might have to check out an episode or two for old times sake, although it may still be showing on Hulu after it expires here.  How to Be a Gentleman looks dreadful, like a very poor man's version of Odd Couple.  Based on the premise (how can someone be charmingly vulgar) and thumbnail, there is zero chance I'll be giving this a shot.  666 Park Avenue might be worth a shot depending on how much you love evil Terry O'Quinn or its premise of a plot in prime Manhattan being worth the price of losing one's soul.  I could see myself checking out the pilot at least.

3.  For those who grew up in the 1990s, the film selection will be dwindling on September 1.  We say au revoir to Anastasis, Anywhere But Here, Days of Thunder, Double Jeopardy, Eraser, The Haunting, the Jurassic Parks and The Wood on that date.  And count The English Patient which leaves on September 2.

Fortunately, if you look at the selection of films coming this month, there's some quality replacements.  And I'm not talking about Jaws: The Revenge (although yes, that's on there as well).

2.  Fans of newer films will be losing some gems this month as well.  Documentaries leaving on the first include Exporting Raymond (which indeed is expiring) that gets into how a family sitcom can translate into Russia, Girl Rising which gets into how girls around the world are doing things to lessen the gender gap, Our Man in Tehran which explores the true events that led into Argo from a Canadian point of view, and The Unbelievers which examines the quest of several atheists to use science and reason to cause those following religion to think more about things.  Throw in Levitated Mass, A Year in Burgundy, I Know That Voice, and We Always Lie to Strangers and we're looking at a bad month for recent documentaries.

In fictional films, Childless and Machine has received some critical raves while Humshakals and War of the Worlds: Goliath has drawn brickbats.  All three leave on the first.  After that date, films of varying quality like Out in the Lineup, How to Train Your Dragon 2, and Jobs depart from streaming in September.  They will be missed.

1.  Classic film fans will probably not look forward to this month either.  You may hear a familiar whistle.

Oscar winners/nominees leaving on the first include The Bridge on the River Kwai, The Color Purple, The Crucible, Full Metal Jacket, Jurassic Park, The Robe, Roman Holiday, and Traffic.  Throw in The English Patient on the 2nd and we're definitely feeling the loss here.  Later on, both Lilo and Stitch and How to Train Your Dragon 2 which were nominees for best animated film.  Later on in the month, we're also losing The Kids are Alright.  Netflix might be alright in the end, but not so sure about its subscribers.

The End

Coming to Netflix Streaming September 2016

5 Takeaways for September:

5.  It's a teen oriented sort of month as we get an American Pie spinoff (The Book of Love featuring Bug Hall), Bratz: The Movie based on the line of dolls, and Road Trip which explores a college road trip to recover a tape.  They all appear on the first.  Adding or subtracting a few years adds new seasons of Freeform series Baby Daddy and Young and Hungry as well as Milk Money where a bunch of teens pool their money to get a woman to reveal herself to them leads to love between her and one teen's father.

Fortunately, the class of the month is the "classic" Footloose which combines a modern sensibility of rebellion in a town that appears to be stuck in the 1950s.  It's definitely a toe tapping good time.

4.  Middling month for originals.  No A list titles for Netflix originals this month as we make do with a new season of drug cartel drama Narcos, a new Marvel series in Luke Cage and a Joe Swanberg series called Easy.  There's some standup as both Cedric the Entertainer and Iliza Shlesinger come through with new specials.  There's also various series old and new for kids/teens including Kulipari, Kazoops, and Lost and Found Studios.  Foodies can enjoy a new course of French cuisine as a new season arrives fairly early.

But it's the selection of films and documentaries that could surprise.  Several documentaries led by the Tribeca winning Extremis as well as originals The White Helmets, Audrie and Daisy, and Amanda Knox all appear this month.  Under fictional fare, we have ARQ, a sci-fi thriller led by The Flash's Robbie Amell.

3.  Some New fare led by Disney which we finally taste the first fruit of the much hyped about contract between Netflix and Disney.  Both The Finest Hours (which I suspected) and Zootopia (which I didn't) will start streaming this month.  I'm looking forward to the latter because I heard that it's quite good and could be a serious contender for Best Animated Film at the Oscars (if Finding Dory doesn't win it).

Outside of Disney, highlights include The Imitation Game which was a multiple Oscar nominee for its look inside the life of World War 2 codebreaker Alan Turing, Bayou Maharajah which is a documentary exploring the life of talented but troubled jazz pianist James Booker, Raiders! which is about several friends remaking Raiders of the Lost Ark scene for scene, and big action sequel London Has Fallen.  For some reason, we're also graced with the return of 3 Days to Kill, a film which I found to be enjoyable even as its parts never meshed into a whole.

2.  Some classic gems are led by Jaws, which I'm guessing is the first time it's appeared here.  But yeah, it feels like a good end of summer treat as several people are tasked with eliminating a shark from disturbing the shores of a small tourist town in the heat of summer.  I feel as though you can skip the sequels unless you have to know what happens next.  Also pleased by the arrival/return of Saving Private Ryan, a first rate drama about a group of soldiers tasked with rescuing a soldier who has lost his brothers to war.  Other highlights this month include the multicultural dramas Babel and Crash, the fascinating documentary Man on Wire, and the trainwreck appeal of Nicolas Cage's Wicker Man.  Oh, not the bees!

A note that this is a good month to be a fan of actress Queen Latifah as both her likable remake of Last Holiday and her musical dramedy Joyful Noise appears on September 1.  May have to check Noise out in full, but I can vouch for Last Holiday and you will root for her to succeed.

Finally let's not forget some 1980s films that are for those in the mood for sheer enjoyment.  Other than Footloose which was mentioned earlier, we also have Top Gun to pump the adrenaline.

1.  Hope you like TV as many series add new seasons and several newcomers appear on our streams.  Highlights include new seasons of The Blacklist, The Walking Dead, Gotham, The New Girl, Bones, Family Guy, Portlandia, and Scream.  If your tastes run to foreign fare, new seasons of The IT Crowd, Luther, Wallender, and Call the Midwife are coming as well.  Surprising debuts last month  from Showtime refugees Shameless and Penny Dreadful have new seasons to look forward to as well as the former adds the most recent two full seasons and the latter adds the final season.

Among series that debut in September, highlights include the heroic Supergirl and the musical drama of Galavant as both seasons drop.  Plus there's the exclusive debut of I Am the Ambassador that focuses on the day to day operations and personal life of an American ambassador to Denmark.

That should be enough TV to get you through to the new fall season.
