Leaving Netflix Streaming July 2016

Another month, another plethora of titles going away.  This time, we're losing some classic CBS series and PBS kids shows/documentaries on the first.  I'm hoping for a partial victory of perhaps keeping the Ken Burns's documentaries (not mentioned on Netflix's report) which may be possible.  But it may depend on how tied in Netflix is with the exclusive mantra.

Outside the shows, July 1 shows an alarming winnowing of classic films.  Say goodbye to 2001, Boogie Nights, Bulworth, Butch Cassidy, A Clockwork Orange, Liberty Valance, The Right Stuff, Al Pacino's Scarface and Witness among other titles as the narrowing of the film lists for movies made prior to 2000 continues to dwindle.  For those seeking something lighter, a fond adieu to Along Came Polly, both Flintstones films, Mouse Hunt, Team America, Talladega Nights, and pretty much all the Star Trek films.  It's enough to make you shout Khan at Netflix.

Outside the first, things don't look too bad so far.  I was lucky enough to see A Five Star Life and the travel portion of the film makes it a painless watch, although those seeking more in the main character's plight of emptiness might walk away disappointed.  It disappears July 3.  Unlike last year's shocking expulsion of hundreds of foreign titles, it appears that the Fourth this year is going to be quiet enough to maybe catch up on some upcoming expiries or finish up a binge watching session.  The main titles expected to go so far include one of the late Paul Walker's final films which is Brick Mansions (July 7), a remake of District 13 and the feature film of the cult series Firefly called Serenity (July 16).  The latter is definitely worth checking out even if you hadn't seen the series; enjoyed both Nathan Fillion and Chiwetel Ejiofor in that one.

For those looking at other blogs, keep in mind that the date listed is the date that a film/series expires from Netflix.  Subtract by a day to find out when the last day to watch it is going to be.

Thanks for reading this far and happy streaming:

The End

Coming to Netflix Streaming July 2016

June is turning out to be a decent month for Netflix, what with the new logo and Gilmore mania sweeping the globe prior to the new movies coming out sometime this year.  Almost makes up for that Adam Sandler deal.  Key word being almost.

July takes a half step back mainly due to the fact you won't have Best Picture 2016 winner Spotlight starting to stream this month.  But The Big Short (July 7) which almost won the prize means that step won't be too far.  Other new film highlights would include Best Foreign Film nominee Mustang (July 9), creepy party thriller The Invitation (July 8) and the forbidden romantic drama Kelly and Cal (July 30).

A decent amount of older films make their debuts or returns this July, led by the Back to the Future Trilogy and Lethal Weapons 1-4 (all July 1).  Don't sleep on Beverly Hills Cops 1-2 or Batman the Movie as they hit batstreaming July 1 as well.  KAPOW!  And on July 16, Channing Tatum puts his dukes up for money in Fighting.

For fans of Oscar films, July turns out to be OK as well with Oscar winners such as Gladiator and Working Girl (both July 1) rubs shoulders with nominees Cinderella Man and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (also both on July 1).  I did remember to mention The Big Short already?  Good.

TV fans will note that July is fairly thin compared to late summer and early fall.  But there's a few gems for fans still out there.  The third season of Todd Margaret drops July 14 and brony fans will rejoice as the newest season of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic gallops into view on July 30.  The second season of Joseph Gordon-Levitt's variety series Hit Record materializes on the 31st.  For those wanting to try something new, Season 1 of MTV's Shannara Chronicles launches July 1.  And July 10 is for those willing to tackle the British answer to Game of Thrones as The Last Kingdom debuts.  Season 2 is coming in 2017 from Netflix who has taken over production of that show.

Finally, fans of Netflix originals should look forward to this month as the Indian comedy Brahman Nahman debuts on July 7.  Showing up on the 29th is Ellen Page's highly anticipated Tallulah (no clue what that's about, but surely it's better than The Ridiculous Six The Do-Over, right?).  July 15 marks the debut of the psychological thriller Rebirth.  There's also the Tony Robbins documentary I Am Not Your Guru which also appears on the 15th.

For those wanting their originals in episodic form, July isn't bad either.  New seasons of adult animated series Bojack Horseman (July 22) as well as the returns of kids series Adventures of Puss in Boots (July 15) and teen show Degrassi: The Next Class (July 22).  Anime fans will delight in the antics of Kuromakuro (July 4) and Magi: The Adventures of Sinbad (July 14).  Thriller fans probably have been anticipating the Winona Ryder series Strange Things (July 15); let's hope it was worth the wait.  If you really enjoyed Home, you might find The Adventures of Tip and Oh (July 29) to be fun as well.  Last, sports documentary series fans may find Last Chance U (July 29) worth blowing a whistle for.  But I suspect that might not be the only sports documentary that might be making our way this month.\

Thank you for your time and as always, happy streaming:
