Coming to Netflix Streaming June 2016

While the expirations for this month are atrocious (seriously look at the Leaving Streaming section for June), the films coming in are a tiny step forward in making up for that.  I don't see 500 titles coming back here, but there's surely something you might like.

Star vehicles:  Paul Newman shows off his pool skills in The Hustler, Bill Murray attempts to help an Arab singer get a fair shake in Rock the Kasbah, and Jason Schwartzman attempts to get his life back together in 7 Chinese Brothers all debuting on the 1st.  Also on the First, Brad Pitt attaches himself to the life of Anthony Hopkins and his daughter while holding a secret in Meet Joe Black.  Leonardo DiCaprio attempts to get into the life of FBI director J. Edgar on the First in a rare year without an Oscar nomination.  On the 29th, Dane DeHaan puts himself into the icon of James Dean as Robert Pattinson plays a photographer attempting to get an iconic shot in Life (2015).

Blockbusters:  The entire Jurassic Park trilogy makes its way to Netflix shores on the First as does the big screen remake of Cape Fear.  Also beaming aboard on that day is Star Trek: First Contact, one of the few films in that franchise not currently streaming.  On the 15th, Jeff Bridges and Brenton Thwaites lead an all star cast in The Giver.

Oscar Nominees:  This is actually in pretty good shape this month.  You might whistle a little tune as The Bridge on the River Kwai shows up on the First.  Also on that date, expect to see the story of Celie and company as The Color Purple starts streaming as does the quirky unconventional romance Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind and the Vietnam era flick Full Metal Jacket.  And Elizabeth the Golden Age with Cate Blanchett did win an Oscar for costume design which also streams on the First.  Finally, I would be doing you a disservice if I didn't mention that this year's Best Picture winner Spotlight is streaming on the 22nd.

Indie Fare:  Ashley Judd leads an all-star cast as they attempt to bridge the Big Stone Gap on the First.  Edgar Allan Poe gets his animated due with an all star cast of horror vets as they celebrate his Extraordinary Tales on June 1.  Also on the First, a teen enters herself into a show on The Wonders.  Check out the new Wim Wenders film Every Thing Will Be Fine on the 7th.  And friendship between two people is tested by a newcomer in Cronies on the 27th.

Documentaries:  On the First, fans of the painter can marvel at his works with Bob Ross: Beauty is Everywhere.  Also on the 1st, there's two documentaries that examine stars of yesteryear as we get both Janis: Little Girl Blue and Tab Hunter Confidential added to the streaming rolls.  And two sons reflect on the infamous histories on their fathers as What Our Fathers Did: A Nazi Legacy shows up on the First as well.  The 15th brings multiple documentaries to Netflix streaming including the environmental documentary After the Spill, the political documentary Poverty Inc. and the more lighthearted look at table tennis competitors in Top Spin.  Finally on the 21st, horror fans might flock for a look at the star of Rock n' Roll Nightmare with I Am Thor.

TV:  This month brings us new seasons of Pretty Little Liars (June 2), Scandal (June 11), The League (June 14), Agents of SHIELD (June 16), Grey's Anatomy (June 18), and Cedar Cove (June 18).  Not too bad, plus there's always the possibility of more.

Originals:  The main thing this month is the return of Orange is the New Black whose new season appears June 17.  June 3 brings us both the musical comedy of Bo Burnham: Make Happy as well as the Japanese drama Hibana (Spark).  On the 24th, hopes are high that The Fundamentals of Caring ends up better than the last few Netflix original films (Ridiculous 6, Special Correspondants, and The Do Over).  And the kids should have enough to tide them over this month between a new version of Voltron: Legendary Defender (June 10), the Madagascar antics of All Hail King Julien (June 17), and the rise of more Dreamworks Dragons: Race to the Edge (June 24).

  1. Only July 2 and already some interesting series: Gentlemen & Gangsters (Sweden), which I had to add to My List from my computer; Croma (Argentina), also had to add from my computer; and The Strange Calls (Australia). I had to go to IMDb to figure out what these series were about. IMDb shows a cover for The Strange Calls with a caption that says "A Hulu Exclusive Series". Apparently not that exclusive any more.
