  1. Well, this is turning depressing... Thanks for the catch, though.

    1. Brian, I think you would show a 2/1 expiration date for these titles. Last day to stream is 1/31.

    2. Not seeing anything yet on the DVD side, but I'll take the word of that blog because they very rarely (if ever) miss. All three titles are up now, thanks, Wellesley.

    3. Brian, the expiration dates show up on "My List" on the streaming side. (I don't rent DVDs from Netflix.). Secrets and Lies is also streaming on Amazon Prime without an expiration date as of today.

This is the third time in two years that Netflix has shown an expiration date for Dr. Who and classic Dr. Who. Since these titles are sacred to the Netflix community, can't Netflix get its act together and either renew these before they have to post expiration dates or make some sort of long-term deal with the BBC. These titles also stream on Hulu, and I have never seen Hulu post an expiration date for them.

    4. It would be nice to see Netflix and BBC make a long term deal so that viewers won't have to sweat the possibilities of losing out on Dr. Who. I think this leaves one of a couple of possibilities: 1) Netflix has been negotiating in good faith with the BBC and no deal has been struck yet, 2) The BBC is looking into its own streaming service. If so, bye bye Tardis, and 3) Netflix is procrastinating and waiting for the deadline to get started talking to the BBC. If I had to guess one, I'd go with option A although it could be option D where they won't be able to keep the titles and they're just waiting to tell us.

Finding expiration dates on Hulu are a bit tricky (it involves the queue list, although it would be nice for them to allow you to sort by expiration date). Still haven't been able to figure out how to find those dates on Prime.

It's not showing up on the DVD side, but all three are showing up on streaming as suspected. I wasn't worried about those dates, but at least now we know what we could lose.

  3. While I think a BBC streaming service is likely at some point in the future, I have not heard any rumblings of anything imminent. BBC TV is a strange entity--content is funded by the UK government, by fees on television owners in the UK, by the licensing of their content, and by co-producers, mostly in the U.S. Currently, the BBC is co-producing programs with PBS, HBO, FX, and AMC, which has a financial interest in BBC America as well as the Sundance Channel. As you probably know, AMC has an output deal for its new shows (at least newer than Better Call Saul) and any new co-productions, including AMC-BBC America co-productions. However, I am not aware that Dr. Who has any financial support from AMC other than it is shown on BBC America, so it shouldn't become a Hulu exclusive. Netflix licenses a lot of content from the BBC, some of which is exclusive in the US (like Sherlock) and some of which is non-exclusive and is also shown on Hulu. Hulu also shows BBC content that is not available on Netflix. Some of Hulu's formerly exclusive BBC content like New Tricks and Top Boy has recently shown up on Netflix, and Netflix will be showing the Frozen Planet series from the BBC later this month. My hope is that either A or C applies here and not a switch to exclusivity at Hulu. You may recall sometime ago that Amazon told the BBC that it wanted an exclusive license to BBC shows or it would drop them. The BBC did not give exclusivity to Amazon (except for Orphan Black and The Hours, which were one-off deals). I would be shocked if the BBC did not extend its license for Doctor Who to Netflix. I can't believe the BBC is asking for more than Netflix paid to keep The West Wing, and I think Doctor Who is more popular than The West Wing. If for some reason the license is not renewed, I will blame it on Adam Sandler and his $160 million deal with Netflix.

On a different subject, I have seen reports that Netflix may launch in India by the end of this month, which may explain why we have been flooded recently by Bollywood films. India should be an interesting proposition for Netflix to say the least. Apparently, there are a number of Indian streaming services that recently began operations, all of which have much better access to Indian content than Netflix and are also wholly supported by commercials. I believe Amazon is also looking at expanding Amazon Prime, including Amazon Prime Video, to India. It will be interesting to see how well Netflix can do in a country that does not have a robust, reliable internet, a relatively poor population and no real history of streaming services supported solely by subscriptions. This is clearly a territory that I see being subsidized by US subscribers for the foreseeable future, although maybe India is a country in love with Mr. Sandler...

    1. Based on situations involving Time Warner among others, I think getting content from third party providers will get more difficult in the future as they'll try to make some money off it themselves. Maybe the BBC won't be one of those (as you mentioned, the big three streamers all have hands in the pie), thanks to its government funding. But I'll agree that it won't cost a lot to continue to fund the good Doctor's exploits on Netflix. The question is whether Netflix's desire for exclusives will override that.

Wow, I didn't know they paid $160 million to Sandler for those four films. They're being ripped off wholesale (I don't think he's been funny for a decade now and his best films are about 15 years old).

Yeah, Indian expansion makes sense why we're getting a flood of Indian films and TV shows of late (although I'm disappointed by the lack of Singham Returns, personally). They had some similar issues back when they debuted in Australia (some stiff local competition and less than powerful Internet connections) and they did alright. Although they might have more issues in Korea (they may have fast Internet there, but a big problem with piracy).

  4. Expiring on Netflix reports a lot of great movie titles, like Rain Man, Terms of Endearment, Top Gun, etc. expiring on February 1. In addition to expanding to India, there are reports that Netflix will be streaming in Russia soon. I look forward to many films showing President Putin battling the West (Top Gunsky) as well as the world renowned TV series, Dr. Whosky. Seriously, how many more movies (plus Doctor Who) does Netflix have to remove before it can change its name to NetstraighttoDVDflix?
