Leaving Netflix June 2016

When one glances at the list of expiries for June 1, one can certainly feel the despair particularly if they had been just given a week's notice (see my Call to Action to learn what you can do about this) to play catch up with their queue.  It may be nothing but a batch of non-exclusive titles to Netflix, but it's Oscar nominees like The Cider House Rules, City of God, Cinema Paradiso, Enchanted April, Iris, and My Left Foot as well as fun films like Chocolat, both Kill Bills, and endless sequels to The Crow, Children of the Corn, and Hellraiser to us.  Maybe it's time that some of these titles left, but it's valuable depth that we're losing here and I can understand some of the frustration that David had before leaving What's on Netflix Now.  So many titles from the 1990s and 2000s just going away with a handful of newer titles.  Rumor has it that Hulu is picking up the Mirimax/Dimension slack, although I've heard nothing official as of yet.  Might make up for losing Criterion in October to an extent.

As a rule of thumb, check the lists on the First.  If it's Mirimax or Dimension, odds are that we may not be getting it again for a while (if ever).  If it's not as long as it's not a new title like On the Way to School, Big Muddy, or Girl on a Bicycle, odds are that it may be back fairly soon.

Outside the first, we're losing a couple of TV series (HawthoRNe, Mixology) which has two and one season respectively as well as some more newer films (Oculus, A Haunted House 2, I Am Ali, Elaine Stritch: Just Shoot Me).  The latter is apparently being streamlined directly to Hulu so if you have that service, you might be able to hold off.

Then, we're losing some more Disney titles on the 18th.  With titles like Hercules departing on the First, Mulan, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame join the Greek hero in leaving Netflix.  It's nice that we have The Finest Hours and Zootopia coming in September and October, but doesn't this Disney deal also apply to its back catalog as well?  Not expecting Frozen or Maleficient, but couldn't we get titles like Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, Cinderella (the original animated film), or even Toy Story?

I hate to think what other unpleasant surprises we'll get this month.  At least until Netflix allows us more notice on expiration dates and then maybe we can plan better.
