5 Takeaways:
5. CW on TV. For those fans of Arrow, The Flash, Vampire Diaries, Supernatural, and others, this is your month to catch up as the most recent seasons are made available prior to new ones showing up on TV. Starting next year, it should be easier to catch up on as most, if not all, of the CW shows will release in May or June 2017. Looking for Jane the Virgin or Crazy Ex-Girlfriend? Both have been out since July.
4. Originals Matter. Netflix has said they want to get to a point that 50 percent of its catalogue are going to be originals over the next few year. I suspect this means that more nasty surprises are in store for those who want licensed stuff in the future. But this month, we get a mix of kids series (new seasons of Word Party, Mr. Peabody and Sherman), movies (Siege of Jadotville, Mascots), comedies (Haters Back Off, The Ranch), and specials (Justin Timberlake and the Tennessee Kids, Russell Peters, Joe Rogan). Maybe not an A-list sort of month, but apparently there's something for everyone.
3. Older Movies Take the Reigns. A decent amount of older titles rules the month from the 1980s (Ferris Bueller) on down to the classic era (Breakfast at Tiffany's, Gentleman's Agreement, Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison, Patton). If you're willing to move up your definition of classic, then throw in Unforgiven, Titanic, and Grizzly Man. This month throws some older films into the cinema bin that's filled with newer titles, and that's a good thing.
2. New Movies: Fewer but Still There. Highlights this month include Oscar bait Big Eyes with Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz and possible Oscar nominee Kung Fu Panda 3 (although I think Finding Dory or Zootopia will win it). Outside of those two, it appears that the titles are more indie and/or foreign in nature (Dheepan, Chevalier). Maybe we'll get a pleasant surprise or two along the way.
1. Lack of Horror in October. Compared to the offerings from rivals Hulu and Amazon Prime, there's a disconcerting lack of horror coming this month to Netflix. Other than seasons of American Horror Story and iZombie, one might have to wait until October 28 to find a horror film...the Netflix Original I Am the Pretty Thing that Lives in the House. Hopefully, much like in number 2, we'll have some pleasant surprises in the mix in the days and weeks to come.
Note: Many thanks are in order as we have now passed 50,000 views for this blog. Couldn't have done this without my contributors (Wellesley72 in particular) and readers. Let's keep growing!
