  12. Notwithstanding an on-line video promo from Netflix showing Greenleaf, Season 2, as streaming on Netflix US on 11/1, Netflix’s own media site is listing Greenleaf, Season 2, as a Global Original streaming on 11/1 excluding the US and Canada. It is also showing the TV show The Sinner as a Netflix original streaming on 11/7 even though the show has already appeared on the USA network; and it is showing the film 6 Days as a Netflix original coming on 11/27 even though it can be rented now on Amazon Video. Strange...

    1. Shouldn't have doubted Greenleaf; we apparently had Season 1 available all this time. Suspect we may get 6 Days yet, although I'm surprised/disappointed they hadn't announced it. As for The Sinner, your guess is as good as mine. Perhaps December?

    2. I guess there is a distinction on Netflix’s media site between a Netflix original and a Netflix global original. 6 Days and The Sinner are streaming in some Netflix territories but not in the US. Will they be coming? Who knows? Personally, I am not holding my breath.

  15. Not Coming in 2018:
Gore, starring Kevin Spacey. Netflix has withdrawn from from the production.

    Maybe Not Coming in 2018:
House of Cards, Season 6. Netflix will not participate unless Kevin Spacey withdraws from the show.

Maybe Not Coming to Netflix in the Future:
The Weinstein Company films. Like Relativity Pictures in the past, The Weinstein Company is near bankruptcy, according to news reports. Films scheduled for release this fall are being postponed.. Except a lot of these films to go to other distributors, effectively killing the deal for Netflix to have first rights to stream Weinstein films after theatrical releases. So the two big suppliers of new new movies to Netflix—Disney and Weinstein—are gone after 2018. (In Weinstein’s case, it may be gone after 2017). This puts intense pressure on Netflix to succeed with its original film slate in the future, something I find problematic at best.

  17. Let's tackle these one by one.

Gore is done. Shame because it will join that Bill Cosby special on the scrapheap, but at the same time it's quite understandable.

As for Season 6 of House of Cards, I'd argue it's about 70-30 that we'll get it. Decider wrote a recent article about it and if they *ahem* play their cards Wright, they won't need to do it with Spacey at all (see end of Season 5 to see what I mean).

As for Weinstein, it does sound a lot like Relativity on the surface. The good news relatively speaking is that we have several releases that have already been released (Wind River, Leap, Tulip Fever, Amityville: The Awakening) as well as others we haven't got through yet (Hands of Stone, Regression: which the latter is currently on Prime).

Netflix may have to become more aggressive in acquiring content. I don't think they'll be able to "original" the problem. If they think they can, then I think they'll get an unpleasant surprise as subscribers will start to stream away.

    1. I thought that the fifth season of House of Cards ended on the perfect note. I’m not sure why there is a Season 6. A case of milking the cow too long. Interesting also that The Ranch is continuing despite rape allegations against Danny Masterson.

I don’t know where Netflix gets 80 “original” movies for next year although your list for possibles for next year plus whatever doesn’t show up this year is over 60. My guess is a lot of foreign films to sate the appetite of Netflix’s international audience although how they work for US audiences is problematic at best. I’m not a Bollywood fan but I am seeing a lot of Indian films added each month (probably more than on Netflix India). The problem with non-original film content is that Amazon Prime has a virtual lock on the good indie studios, some of whom they poached from Netflix, followed by Hulu. Netflix content is coming mainly from studios that have traditionally sold straight to DVD and VOD, with a few exceptions (IFC, Dreamworks, Weinstein and the soon-to-be lamented Disney deal). I have to laugh when Reed Hastings says that Disney deal was no biggie because it applied only to the US and Canada. Reed, where are your profits coming from?

  19. Reaction to possible Disney-Fox tie-up? Some refer to this as the Netflix killer although with Disney and Fox owning 30% each of Hulu, it seems to me that this might kill Hulu first. If Disney moves all ABC and Fox (including FX) content to a Disney streaming platform, where does that leave Hulu (which will now be 60% owned by Disney, 30% owned by Comcast (NBC) and 10% owned by Time Warner? Also, I believe that Fox has a contract with HBO (owned by Time Warner) that runs to 2020 or beyond for first non-theatrical rights to Fox films. Does Disney buy that contract out? Do we then see a ripple effect where every other major film studio starts up its own streaming service, depriving HBO and STARZ of its movie content and essentially placing them on the same level as Netflix and Amazon Prime. While I am sure that HBO will survive, STARZ and Lionsgate (which share some common ownership) would probably have to combine to survive. Interesting times...

  20. Despite InstantWatcher’s claim to the contrary, The Journey is the Destination is not streaming (yet) on Netflix. Neither is 6 Days or The Sinner, at least on Netflix US despite the Netflix pr claim that each is a Netflix “original”. Maybe in Thailand?
Also, this is the first Tuesday I can remember this year where Netflix is not streaming a stand-up comedy special. Apart from Alias Grace, an inauspicious start to November.

  26. First of all, this would practically require everything to click and in a lot of cases with companies this big, that is easier said than done. Perhaps Disney takes over Hulu? May be more effective to use an existing product than build a whole new contraption. But we'll see whether this goes through or not. If it makes the next stage, I suspect government interference will be less now than if it happened several years ago.

As for Starz, I think they're already in trouble. New films are sparse and the original content hasn't quite caught up yet, although they've made more effective content than Hulu or Prime. I suspect we might get a merger of cable stations where Starz ends up with Showtime or HBO. Perhaps even Netflix? We shall see.
