Leaving Netflix Streaming November 2016

Five Takeaways:

5.  TV Going Away:  On the first, we lose both seasons of Yu-Gi-Oh!, all 5 of Chuck, all 6 of The Powderpuff Girls, and a whopping 10 (or 11) seasons of the British Shameless.  During the month, we may well lose Farscape, The Roosevelts: An Intimate History, Grand Hotel, The Boondocks, and Courage the Cowardly Dog.  I know Netflix is trying to create its own Must-See-TV, but considering Americans just had their rates raised by at least $2, that deserves a gong.

4.  Family Movie Miss Out:  On the first, we lose the first Addams Family movie, Barnyard, Bratz (So soon? I think it was this time last month when it showed up), Escape to Witch Mountain, Harry and the Hendersons, Kangaroo Jack, and 3 Open Seasons movies.  Throw in Boxtrolls and the animated Robin Hood (um, Disney, we do want some classics to stream as well) and we got some depth going away.  Although a close look at what's coming in November might yield some quality replacements.

3.  Tom Hiddleston Fans Lose Out:  Fans of Marvel's Loki better catch up quick with his early work in Unrelated and Archipelago as well as a more recent supporting turn in Exhibition as all three bid viewers adieu on November 4 which wipes away his films/series in half.  Good thing his starring turn on High Rise just recently moved in.

2.  Classic Films Go Away:  The first brings to a halt the streaming of such entries as Deliverance, Desk Set, ET: The Extra Terrestrial, Fatal Attraction, Fresh, Harry and Tonto, Into the Wild, and Urban Cowboy.  Classic films are turning out to be light in early November, but a massive influx of war documentaries will invade in the middle of the month.

1.  Generation X Meltdown:  So many entries for the 1990s and 2000s continue to vanish this month as titles such as The Addams Family, Always, Can't Hardly Wait, The Core, Equilibrium, The Family Man, For the Boys, Fresh, Get Rich or Die Tryin', The Holiday, Into the Wild, both Legally Blondes (we'll pretend the direct to DVD sequel never existed), The Little Rascals, Major League, Mean Creek, Meet Joe Black, Rounders, Scream 2, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, Spy Game, The Sum of All Fears, Varsity Blues, and What Women Want all leave on the first.  The sixteenth brings additional sorrow with the losses of George Clooney in The American and Let's Go to Prison.  And the end of the month sees the last ride of Vin Diesel in XXX.  Although a few movies arrive to take its place in November, that is a lot of losses.  And I didn't even mention Gigli (let's forget I just did).

The End

Coming to Netflix Streaming November 2016

NOTE: Should be caught up now.  Thanks to Netflix for not having many surprises over the last two days which made it a bit easier to catch up.

Five Takeaways:

5.  Christmas in November:  Christmas comes early as Bob the Builder and Thomas and Friends brings forth the holiday cheer with specially themed episodes on the first.

4.  Frightful Fall:  Although a day (and probably a month) later than necessary, Netflix nevertheless does deliver some chillers to keep you wearing a sweater inside.  Titles on the first include two Stephen King films (Cujo, Thinner) and Tales from the Darkside.  There's a smattering of other horror films coming then as well, but other than Ravenous, they probably can be better appreciated on the main list.

3.  Classics Slow to Start, but Steady:  Arguably there's three titles for older viewers on the first.  Undoubtedly, The African Queen belongs on the list as probably does Bob Roberts.  The question is whether Oliver Stone's The Doors would qualify.  Regardless, a second beachfront is established on the 18th as we get an unexpected plethora of critically acclaimed World War 2 documentaries (amount of nothing as none of them showed up).

And for fans of classic TV, a good chance to see the Norman Lear documentary Just Another Version of You on Netflix which streams on the first.

2.  Originals Save the Day:  I'll be frank.  This appears to be a good month if you like Netflix originals.  Led by the Black Friday premiere of Gilmore Girls: Year in the Life and including debuts from The Crown, Paranoid, and 3%, Netflix may have the goods to make this a good month.  Then you throw in stand up specials from Dana Carvey, Colin Quinn, Dieter Nunhr, and Michael Che as well as new seasons from Lovesick (used to be Scrotal Recall), Danger Mouse, All Hail King Julian, and Beat Bugs, and I think this is one month where the originals may pay for itself.

As for films, I have high hopes for The Ivory Game, middling hopes for Kevin James's True Memoirs of an International Assassin (may be the dumb humor movie that I am looking for), and no clue as to the quality of James Wolk's Mercy.  If Netflix insists on going the HBO route, maybe they should remember that HBO nailed original films as well as series at their heyday.

1.  F is for Family:  No, that show isn't coming back for a new season in November.  Just a note in that time for Thanksgiving that a lot of movies streaming in November have to deal with family units.

Take Boyhood which finally starts on Black Friday.  Or Paddington which debuts on the 16th.  Or the more dysfunctional clan on 2015's Take Me to the River which begins on the 12th.  One of the few details we know about Mercy (November 22) so far is that it has to deal with family protecting their own mother from a religious cult.  Then there's the Disney reboot of The Jungle Book appearing on November 30 which is all about the unusual family formed around a little boy.  Finally, there's the Gilmore Girls mini-series which is all about the family ties that bond in a small town of Stars Hollow.

Alright, surely you have something to be thankful for as the leaves turn brown and the weather gets a bit chillier.  Those nights call for Netflix on the tube.
