Leaving Netflix Streaming October 2016

5 Takeaways:

5.  Adios, TV.  Definitely losing Heroes and Psych on October 1 and more series are fixing to join them.  Fortunately, those shows don't have as many seasons or are as well beloved (Inspector Morse being an exception, although it may be possible that it is renewed).  But still, we are starting to see where the focus on originals continues to hit.  Fortunately, we expect a refresh of PBS content and more episodes of Foodie and Home Project series to fill the void, at least for now.

4.  New Films Trickle Away.  This month so far, we're losing the critically acclaimed Runoff as well as Actress, Hammer of the Gods, and the exclusive Interview.  If you want to catch any of these or other titles that may pop up in the upcoming days/weeks, set aside some time and catch them ASAP because it's unlikely they'll return.

3.  1980s-1990s Bummer.  On the first alone, we say farewell to Anna and the King, the Back to the Future trilogy, the first two Beverly Hills Cops, Braveheart, Congo, Deep Impact, Eyes Wide Shut, the original Land Before Time, Lethal Weapons 1-4, My Girl, Nell, and Twilight (the movie with Paul Newman and Gene Hackman, not the one with the sparkly vampires).  Odds are fairly good that a few titles may return pretty soon (probably some combination of Braveheart, Congo, and/or Deep Impact), but if you're wanting to see Marty McFly in action or witness the Murtaugh/Riggs chemistry, you may want to queue it up and give it a whirl before the end of the month.  Halloween is when The Truman Show says good morning, good evening, and good night to the streaming service.

2.  Aughts Drought.  Also on the first, say goodbye to Erin Brockovich, The Good Thief, the first two Honeys, Insomnia (Al Pacino/Robin Williams remake), Jimmy Neutron, Mr. Deeds, Rumor Has It, Someone Like You, Timeline, and V for Vendetta, among others.  Some titles are more memorable than others, obviously.  But it's still a loss for subscribers when we lose any sort of depth of titles without adequate replacements.

1.  Oh, the horror.  It's not bad enough that we aren't getting a decent array of new scary titles with Halloween approaching.  But we're losing some classics on the first as well with the departures of Cujo and The Exorcist.  Maybe losing Dreamcatcher and Scary Movie would not qualify as a major loss normally, but horror aficionados will not be happy that Netflix is losing fear worthy titles while its rivals are stocking up for October.  Count in the early month departure of Jack the Reaper and the mid month descent of Devil and unless some surprises come in, we're likely looking at a weak horror month overall.

NOTE: Many thanks to Carol's What's Expiring on Netflix Soon for helping us with some of the expiries for the month of October.  It's a great site and you should check it out.

The End

Coming to Netflix Streaming October 2016

5 Takeaways:

5.  CW on TV.  For those fans of Arrow, The Flash, Vampire Diaries, Supernatural, and others, this is your month to catch up as the most recent seasons are made available prior to new ones showing up on TV.  Starting next year, it should be easier to catch up on as most, if not all, of the CW shows will release in May or June 2017.  Looking for Jane the Virgin or Crazy Ex-Girlfriend?  Both have been out since July.

4.  Originals Matter.  Netflix has said they want to get to a point that 50 percent of its catalogue are going to be originals over the next few year.  I suspect this means that more nasty surprises are in store for those who want licensed stuff in the future.  But this month, we get a mix of kids series (new seasons of Word Party, Mr. Peabody and Sherman), movies (Siege of Jadotville, Mascots), comedies (Haters Back Off, The Ranch), and specials (Justin Timberlake and the Tennessee Kids, Russell Peters, Joe Rogan).  Maybe not an A-list sort of month, but apparently there's something for everyone.

3.  Older Movies Take the Reigns.  A decent amount of older titles rules the month from the 1980s (Ferris Bueller) on down to the classic era (Breakfast at Tiffany's, Gentleman's Agreement, Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison, Patton).  If you're willing to move up your definition of classic, then throw in Unforgiven, Titanic, and Grizzly Man.  This month throws some older films into the cinema bin that's filled with newer titles, and that's a good thing.

2.  New Movies: Fewer but Still There.  Highlights this month include Oscar bait Big Eyes with Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz and possible Oscar nominee Kung Fu Panda 3 (although I think Finding Dory or Zootopia will win it).  Outside of those two, it appears that the titles are more indie and/or foreign in nature (Dheepan, Chevalier).  Maybe we'll get a pleasant surprise or two along the way.

1.  Lack of Horror in October.  Compared to the offerings from rivals Hulu and Amazon Prime, there's a disconcerting lack of horror coming this month to Netflix.  Other than seasons of American Horror Story and iZombie, one might have to wait until October 28 to find a horror film...the Netflix Original I Am the Pretty Thing that Lives in the House.  Hopefully, much like in number 2, we'll have some pleasant surprises in the mix in the days and weeks to come.

Note:  Many thanks are in order as we have now passed 50,000 views for this blog.  Couldn't have done this without my contributors (Wellesley72 in particular) and readers.  Let's keep growing!
